Tutoring typically forms part of an education program, University Lecturers 'tutor' students.  Tutoring tends to be focused on teaching, or enhancing taught skills and knowledge.

Coaching is focused on competency and skill development. All professional sports teams have at least one 'coach' focused on developing team members and helping them reach their full capabilities. Project & Program Management Coaching focuses on enhancing the ability of project and program managers to apply PM skills effectively to help them be successful in the workplace. The aims of coaching include:
 - enhancing leadership effectiveness, performance and career progression within a specific organisational context
 - development and integration of appropriate mindsets and behaviours
 - focussing on specific requirements needed for the application of capability.

Your coach brings an enhanced range of skill-sets and aims to transform your mindset with new perspectives. The work is focused on 'raising the bar'; your coach will help you set your career goals and then hold you accountable. Your results goals set the overall objectives and are usually stable, they focus on outcomes. Activity goals are reviewed and updated regularly and are focused on doing things that work towards achieving the desired results.

Mentoring is a more complex process and relationship.  The skill of the Mentor is to help unlock the complex factors needed to allow the Mentee to grow within his/her self, ask the right questions from within, develop creative solutions, and find new ways to succeed from within themselves. Frequently the Mentee has a similar level of knowledge and experience to the Mentor but needs an independent third party to talk through issues and to explore options and new ideas with; using the combined depth and breadth of vision of both the Mentor and the Mentee to create new insights and knowledge. The aims of mentoring include:
 - being challenged to explore and integrate new perspectives
 - developing new insights on specific challenges, including strategy and policy.

Your mentor has broad useful experience and the ability to share that with you at a practical and pragmatic level that is goal-directed and which you can apply to your own context.

Personal Mentoring and PM Coaching

Learning Objectives

Mentoring can be highly beneficial to experienced managers who appreciate the usefulness of talking through current and potential issues with an experienced peer within a confidential relationship. For more on Mentoring see our blog post: The Art of Mentoring

Coaching is a way in which a project manager can benefit from alternative ideas and opinions, and the reasons behind them, from an experienced coach. Mosaic's coaching is mind-opening, not instructional, we do not set out to teach or instruct you, rather we encourage you to learn for yourself - empowerment leads to the most satisfying outcomes. It is through sharing your coach's ideas, you become better able to make your own good decisions. One-on-one coaching and/or mentoring is a very effective way of developing your talents, we focus our coaching on people who are managing projects or programs but have not gained much experience of the complexities of different project situations.

Every assignment is customised to meet the specific objectives of the Protege (or Mentee)!

The time spent providing support to the Protege by the Mosaic Mentor and Coach is carefully planned and managed to deliver optimum results.

Typical arrangements for a personal Project Management Coaching / Mentoring assignment are:

The Mentor and Protege determine their expectations of the relationship. The Protege should have a limited number of clear objectives in mind, typically less then four. The mentoring process usually involves:

  • Establishing a regular monthly meeting; it can be either by phone or in person depending on the Protege's work commitments and preferences.

  • At the first meeting the Mentor and Protege should establish some further meeting times

  • So that the Protege can get maximum benefit from the time together, he/she should develop an agenda for each meeting

  • The agenda should focus on the areas that the Protege has outlined as objectives

  • The Mentor and Protege do need to assess after perhaps six months, if the mentoring relationship is delivering the expected outcomes. It may be necessary to re-assess the approach at that time, or indeed at any time throughout the relationship

  • Typical objectives are listed below:
o guidance on areas of development as a project manager
o guidance on how to increase/improve the service offered to customers
o guidance in how to develop thought leadership
o guidance in professional development as a practitioner of the discipline

  • The mentoring role should not be regarded as a supervisory role

  • Although the Mentor and Protege may only meet monthly, the relationship will include the flexibility of communication through email or telephone if the need arises.

Persian Proverb

He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool, shun him.
He who knows not and knows he knows not is a student, teach him.
He who knows and knows not he knows is asleep, wake him.
He who knows and knows he knows is wise, follow him.

The cost for Project and Program Management Coaching and Mentoring services provided to individual Proteges by Dr. Lynda Bourne (excluding travel and accommodation) is typically $220 per one hour session. Technical coaching in specific project management skills provided by other Mosaic consultants (eg scheduling) will be quoted, depending on the requirements of the Protege.

Remote Mentoring Option

Remote mentoring services are offered where face-to-face mentoring is not possible. This option requires more work by the Protege, particularly in developing and maintaining a reflective diary.

If this option appeals, review our 'remote mentoring guidelines' and then contact us at training@mosaicprojects.com.au to discuss your specific needs.

One of Mosaic's trained consultants works with selected project team members either individually, or as an adviser to the overall team, to assist in the acquisition of skills needed for the delivery of successful project outcomes. The structure of each commission is specifically tailored to meet the requirements of the client's organisation and people.  The value of an external coach supporting the project team is best described as: 'The project manager’s job is to use the people to build the project. The coach’s job is to use the project to build the people.'  We find this one of the most successful and rewarding parts of our consultancy work that delivers significant, lasting benefits to the mentees and host organisation. Typical assignments include:

In addition to our on-site support and mentoring for organisations, individual working project and program
managers may join Mosaic's personal [Project Management Coaching and Mentoring] scheme.

Every assignment is customised to meet the specific objectives of the organisation and their nominated Proteges (or Mentees)!

The time spent 'on-site' and in providing support to each Protege by the Mosaic Mentor is carefully planned and managed to deliver optimum results. The mentoring assignment may be undertaken on a 'stand-alone' basis or integrated with, and designed to support formal training processes. Mentoring and coaching assignments are lead by Dr. Lynda Bourne, supported by other consultants and trainers as needed.  The service can include face-to-face discussions, telephone conversations and e-mail exchanges. In addition to ongoing advice, areas for attention are identified and discussed at regular (monthly) reviews.

Mosaic's coaching is targeted, and because it is an integrated part of the Protege's work pattern, can deal with specific gaps in experience or areas of concern. Benefits to the organisation and individuals may include:

Mosaic's coaching is tailored to meet the convenience of both parties. Our service is provided for a fixed monthly fee, agreed for a set period, based on a broad assessment of the time required. This method removes inhibitions from making specific requests for advice (i.e. no clock ticking away) and results in better value for money. The service is based on trust that it will not be mis-used, and is subject to periodic review by either party.
